When I was younger Neopets and Virtual Pet sim websites used to be my jam, my hyperfocus even.
That being said it seems like there's not a lot of good consistent lists of petsites out there that actually keeps track of what is still curremtly active, and I'm gonna also sort them out a little bit by type
Noun-Pets: Neopets and various neopets clones. This is excluding 1:1 or near 1:1 clones where it's pretty much literally neopets but on slightly different servers / only a half step to the left (eg moderneo, virtu.pets, grundo's cafe, and the like; 1:1 neopets clones are out ther if you're willing to go digging for them, nothing against them but I do not think it wise to try to directly link those here). Some of the games on here kind of push the label of what does / doesn't really count as a neopets clone in terms of gameplay.
Marapets gets an unhonerable mention. Not keen to bring in drama but it is contentious because on one hand it has a much more stable economy and robust thoughtful systems put in, but on the other hand upon closer inspection a lot of it is edgier and feels more mean-spirited. This is also setting aside some of the really dubious design choices across the board.
Breeding type A - Mostly breeding focused with customization being a focus. Hate to use Wajas as the meterstick since rogue-likes and using -likes as a descriptor can sometimes not be great for a number of reasons but a lot of these run on the same principles or are adjacent to the breeding style principles here.
Breeding type B - Breeding sims that model after flight rising's specific style of breeding which is more and less complex thatn Type A breeding style. Mostly in that there's a fixed "Color wheel" system wherein you only get X Y Z colors as breeding results in comparison to type A breeding wherein it's more on a color slider where it either takes the middle item or selects any color between point a and b when breeding. Currently only has two so far with Mythaura still being in development. Flight Rising's continued success and the fact that there's now at least one game that uses a similar system kind of proves that the flight rising model seems to be the good pet sim model for this era in comparison to the era of Neopets-clones
