Particular People

Yesterworld, Defunctland - generally for themepark and themepark adjacent things

Plainly difficult, Kyle Hill - For nuclear disaster suff, things I find interesting. Also just a lot of disaster related content here.

vivalacloud8745 - a classic lets player, has done a couple of playthroughs that while are more than 10 years old, theyre pretty good quality. A nice lense into the past.

Deceased Crab - another old-school lets player, I mostly remember them for their cave story lets play but they have other interesting lets plays to peruse

TotalBiscuit - Was a big fan of his videos and things, it's super rough that he's passed away (and has been gone for some time now). Kind of a sombering reminder of Death, especially Death Online.

General Search Terms

GDQ - Games done quick is pretty much speedrun videos. It's fascinating to watch people break games apart so they can play them faster.

Mario Odyssey Multiplayer - Pretty much a mod where people can play Super Mario Odyssey in a multi-player mode. Mostly for hide and seek, can also search as "Odyssey Multi-player Hide n Seek".

Hollow Knight Manhunt / Multiplayer - Another series where a game's modded to be multi-player. They're all pretty good videos. Can also be known as "Hollow knight vs X hunters" (X being a number of hunters)

Monument Mythos - Sort of a Analogue horror series but I wouldn't really define it as analogue horror. It's kind of a strange alternative history series where there's monsters beneath the monuments and all that jazz. Very good, would Reccomend watching Mr. Manticore's Videos.

Travis McEnery - [arachnaphobia warning] Mostly a great channel that's just discussion about spiders in your house. I find it delightful and informative. For some people learning more about something makes you less afraid of it, your mileage may vary on whether that's effective for you or not but for me I just really find this interesting since the guy also talks a lot about history of spider research and the like.

Individual Videos

Funny

They're Taking the Hobbits to Isengard! - Just an internet classic

The cover by The Dread Crew of Oddwood is also pretty good

Double Rainbow song - Also another internet classic

EverymanFORTRESS - One of my favoritye really old videos where they dubbed one of the old slenderman videos with Team Fortress 2 Dialogue.

iaigiri.wmv - Someone rigged up a rhythm heaven game such that it can detect a katana, and then played the katana game

I Accidentally had the Hypest Boss Fight of All Time- Someone on a stream set themselves up to have Shrek 2's "I need a Hero" as they fought Radhan from the game Elden Ring. It syncs up surprisingly well, and it indeed is an incredibly hype video

rpgmaker game stuff

Yeah no rpgmaker games was my passion in middle school

Let's talk about RPG maker horror

The Wheel of RPG Maker Horror

The Lost Art of RPG Maker Games

RPG Maker Horror Games, Surrealism, and Trauma

A brief retrospective of some RPGMaker games (note this is not brief unless you count 3+ hours as brief)

Wanted to make one myself once upon a time. The dreams got unintentionally crushed by Toby Fox's Undertale because I read it as doing what I wanted to do with my game but a lot better (in hindsight it didn't really but I was just more afraid of my game getting called a lame undertale ripoff). I might still do it because having goat characters by coincidence is not in fact ripping off undertale.

honestly if I weren't busy with other stuff and someone else has probably done it better, i'd love to do a general write up of the legacy of corpse party on the rpgmaker games (as a genre or otherwise). Like the fingerprints are all over the genre.

Music and Media

(where not applicable to the above)

Why Ratatouille is Pixar's Magnum Opus - Lots of thought pieces about ratatouille but this one is also very good

Capitalism, Poverty, and Ratatouille - a good essay about Ratatouille and a great discussion about the themes that it grapples with.

The Curse of Minky Momo – Better to just watch this one, as it discusses the eponymous curse of Minky Momo (a famous magical girl series)

Why You Should Watch Paranoia Agent – another Supereyepatchwolf video essay, but if you’ve seen Paranoia agent it’s a good watch. There are some spoilers in it though, so this is generally recommended after watching the original Anime.

Balto: Human Narratives and Wildness Undone – a very thoughtful video essay about the narrative around Balto and the greater reaching implications of some of the themes therein.

Zootopia, Umasou, and the Failures of Race Allegory | Jack Saint – A very good video essay about how various pieces of media try to grapple with Race & Race allegories through substituting race issues with animals. A very good watch, even if I can’t describe it very well.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (The Infinite Review) – a good review of NGE

Why this creepy melody is in so many movies - a very short Vox video on dies irae, which is fun

Why the Music in Cats (2019) is Worse than you Thought - a very good video on how music production works (and in some cases really doesn't)

Art Restoration (and the Biggest Mod in Resident Evil History) - a really good discussion about Art restoration and the intersection therein with game modding

Who’s Afraid of Modern Art: Vandalism, Video Games, and Fascism - a very thoughtful video about art.

The Autistic Horror of Don't Hug Me I'm Scared (season 1) - Not that people out there don't construct engaging analysis' of the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared Series, this video's a refreshing perspective that's less concerned with "solving / explaining" it and more about looking at it as an allegory for the autistic experience & the ways pople tend to treat neuridivergent / disabled children in educational spaces.

It's more of a look on "well how does that make You Feel", rather than just "hey x = y = z". I also sorely relate to the phrase "no matter what it was, I always had the wrong feelings"

THE PLAGIARISM TRIFECTA

A series of 3 videos that were about plagiarism. Let me tell you the first and the second of these hit the internet by storm and if you weren't there on Dec 2, 2023, it was wild throughout most of that month.

Plagiarism and You(Tube) - a nearly 4 hour video about Plagiarism and Youtube, how Youtube kind of encourages this type of content farming and the various forms it comes in. Though it is four hours long it is a great primer for really getting into Plagiarism and the hows and why people do it, as well as why it's wrong from a perspctive that isn't academic in nature (because realistically as shown here not all plagiarism is just people copying college essays).

I Fact-Checked The Worst Video Essayist On YouTube- This one is also an hour long and it goes into more depth about fact checking a specific person from the previous video essay

TomSka's Guide To Plagiarism (The Somerton Scale) - another video in response to hbomberguy's video. Kind of goes into the more grey area situations with regards to the whole "there is no original idea everything is derivative". Talking about inspiration / influence vs theft.

The Furry Stuff (tm)

On the Ethics of Boinking Animal People - an interesting take on trying to define what a furry is

Adastra: The Best Furry Visual Novel Made Me Come Out as Gay and Now You Have to Hear About It - it's about a very gay furry visual novel but this is a great essay if you're willing to put up with it being roughly three hours long.

Echo: A Magnificent Furry Horror Game - a really good essay on Echo, and how it's a genuinely good horror dating game. The writing is very tight on it. This is also about a gay furry game (but not the same one as above).

The Fandom: A Furry Documentary Full Movie - a furry documentary that's a pretty good watch.

Horror

Horror in Video Games - a pretty thoughtful video about horror in video games

Why Do Horror Games Sound So Beautiful? - another good essay by Jacob Geller

LOCAL58: The Broadcast Station that Manipulates You - A pretty good video essay on Local58 (a piece of online horror media)

Explaining: This House Has People In It - a Pretty good Night Mind essay about one of my favorite pieces of online internet horror media.

Annihilation: Surrendering To Creation - I like Annihilation, so this is just also here, because I think it's thoughful.

Horror in Impossible Places: Liminal Spaces and The Backrooms - A good examination of the Liminal spaces as well as Liminal spaces as a story trope / setting

Control, Anatomy, and the Legacy of the Haunted House - an excellent video about haunted houses

Other

Nascar and the Art of Revenge - a very good video about Nascar

Professional Wrestling is Stupid and Beautiful and I Love it - a very good essay about professional wrestling as a form of performance story telling

Negative Ion/Anti-5g Products Are Actually RADIOACTIVE - a fascinating deep dive into the negative ion / anti-5g pseudoscience / weird healing quackery rabbit hole. Sure the title does give it away how they get away with some of the claims but it's actually fascinating and a very good watch (also please for the love of goodness do not buy these products they're kind of scammy at best and at worst literally radioactive)

My Video Got 2 Companies Shut Down! (And even worse negative ion products) - The thrilling sequel to the previous Video. Also a very good thing to watch. Lots of further developments to the whole "selling radioactive Thorium for healing and anti-5g warding" situation. This pair pof videos is just fascinating as a person who thinks the history of radiation and stuff relating to that interesting.

Disney's FastPass: A Complicated History - a nearly 2 hr documentary about the loaded history of Fastpast and what had ultimately killed it
